I found your e-mail on the RAINN website. I am looking for statistics on how many pregnancies occur from rape. Do you have any references for me?

Thank you,

Jo Ann Madigan

Thanks for your note to FEMINIST.COM. I would imagine that the statistic you are looking for is too difficult to obtain precisely because so many rapes still go unreported, therefore, any estimate of how many pregnancies resulted from rape would be a low estimate. My other rationale is purely a guess, but if the woman got pregnant I bet she would be even more hard pressed to call it rape. Unnecessary shame is still such a strong emotion. However, if such a statistic did exist, I would recommend two places to possible obtain it:

1.) CIA or the FBI or the Deparment of Justice--each of these branches of the U.S. government are responsible for reporting the number of rapes.

2.) The Alan Guttmacher Institute, which has the most comprehensive statistics on pregnancy/reproductive health.

I hope that helps. Good luck on your search.
