I'm happy to answer your questions:
1. What exactly is feminism?
Feminism is a the movement to
ensure that each individual
has enough information to make
informed choices about his/her
life
-- it's really about a value
system that equally respects
all individuals and their choices
.
2. Do most feminists disagree
with abortions? Why?
Most feminists would fight to
keep abortion safe, legal and
rare -- and most would support
women's access to make such
a choice. However, not all feminists
would/could make this choice
and many even oppose it in their
personal lives - but opposing
it
as a whole is a contradiction
to feminism, which is about
opening up choice.
3. Are some feminists doing
it for the wrong reasons? What
are the wrong reasons to be
a feminist?
You shouldn't be
a feminist if you are only interested
in your own personal rights
and what choices you can make
-- you have to be in it for
all. It's also not about "pro-women"
politics -- for instance, how
many women are CEOS -- it's
about changing the situation
for everyone
.
4. Would you say that feminism
should be more important in
third world countries than in
the United States or Canada
where we aren't faced with constant
male repression?
I think it's
equally important everywhere.
5. What kind of things can people
do to support feminism?
People
can find something in their
own community or lives that
they want to change and start
there. It might be as simple
as saying "that's not funny"
to a racist joke or you might
work to get moving tickets donated
to your local battered women's
shelter.
6. Why be a feminist?
Because
your life will be improved and
so will the lives of those around
you.
7. What other things do feminists
support?
It depends on the feminist.
