Thanks
for your note to FEMINIST.COM--and
I've done my best to answer
your questions. I hope this
helps with your research paper.
Good luck - Amy
1.) What is being a feminist
mean to you?
By dictionary definition, a
feminist is someone who supports
the full social, political,
and economic equality of all
people. I like to add to that,
the goal of feminism is to be
able to have enough information
to make informed choices about
our lives. Also, by my definition---feminism
is about "freeing" everyone--so
it intersects with class and
race.
2.) When did you first become
a feminist?
In hindsight, I realize that
I have been a feminist my entire
life. However, I didn't outwardly
acknowledge this until I was
in college and realized that
I need to be vocal about my
beliefs since there was still
so much standing in my way.
3.) What made you decide
to become a feminist?
I become a feminist mostly as
a result of my situation--or
my life's experiences. I was
raised by a single mother, and
I saw her struggle with that
and with building a career for
herself. I was always athletic
and I always saw the boys teams
having more access than the
girls. Then in my career, I
saw too many professions that
were predominated by males--being
high wage jobs and too many
professsions that were predominated
by females--being low wage jobs.
So really I became a feminist,
because I wanted to change these
things--and because I wanted
to be myself.
P.S. Please feel free to write
back if you need me to clarify
anything.
