Hi,

I am a student at Cal State and we are doing a research paper on feminism in Disney movies, focusing more on the Cinderella movie. What is your feminist point of view on Disney?

Beatriz

Dear Beatriz,

In general, Disney has not been known for its feminist films. Their films tend to not only be misguided and narrow when it comes to gender, but also when it comes to race and class. The story of Cinderella is certainly not very feminist - the evil stepmother, the beautiful sister compared to the stepsisters, the fact that a woman needs a prince to save the day.

Think about Cinderella's life in the context of your own - would you want it to work out that way (not the ends, but the means)? Yes we all might want life to eventually get that easy, but, one, we don't want it to happen via a man; and, two, if it did happen that way, we are likely not be happy since our happiness will be found through someone else. I hope that helps.
