I'm giving a speech to persuade my classmates to take action in adding a self-defense course to the high school curriculum. My question was, what are some tips, other than writing to my state representatives, that I can give my classmates if they would like to get involved?

I think that's great that you are lobbying for a self-defense class in your school. In terms of writing letters -- check out moveon.org -- they have good models of that.
