I'm sorry to hear about what
happened to you and your friend,
but glad to know that you are
using your experiences to prevent
it from happening to others.
As for suggestions - how about
calling your local police station
and getting statistics on rape
and battery in your community.
There are national statistics,
but sometimes that is too impersonal
and removed for people. You
could say "Every day a woman
is raped in this community."
"Domestic Violence is the leading
killer of women between the
ages of 18 adn 40." And others
like that. For other current
statistics and information,
see the Rape,
Abuse and Incest National Network
(RAINN) page here at FEMINIST.COM.
You might also want to include
empowering information about
where there is a rape crisis
center in your community, and
find out if the local police
force been trained on these
issues, so they fully understand
them.
I'd also suggest you check
out some of the links in our
Sexual
Harassment and Violence Against
Women section for other
ideas and resources. I hope
this helps--good luck.
