My name is Kimberly. I am 21 years old and am clueless as to what my first step of taking maternity leave would be. Do I need to go through unemployment first or what? Please help me if you can. Thanks in advance, Kimberly

Thanks for your note to Feminist.com. Every employer has different rules about maternity leave (or paternity leave). So the short answer is that you should ask your employer (really the Human Resources Department if your workplace is big enough to have one) what their policy is.

If your place of employment has more than 50 employees (I think it's 50, but it might be more), then they fall under the Family Medical Leave Act--whereby they are required to give you a minimum of 6 weeks (I think it's six). To learn more about that, you can contact your representative, 9to5 (they drafted the lesiglation), or the Department of Labor.
