Suzanne Diamond formed The Futon Shop while she was searching for an organic bed for her family. She had two little babies at home and wanted a safe non-toxic bed for her children. After searching and finding only beds with petroleum based mattresses with harsh fire retardants, she decided to make a mattress on her own without chemicals. With her family’s health in mind, she sat on the living room floor and proceeded to make her own chemical free mattress by hand. Word got out and friends and family began asking for the same mattress. She would sew each mattress with layered wool and cotton, peace of mind, and comfort for her family and friends.
The Futon Shop is farm to mattress beginning with local sourcing of ingredients from farms producing USDA certified organic cotton and wool shipped in from local American farms. Once the ingredients reach the San Francisco factory, The Futon Shop then processes the wool and organic cotton into felted bats (bundles) used as layers in each mattress or furniture cushion. The organic bats of cotton and wool are combined with natural Dunlop latex, pure coconut coir and double tempered steel micro-coils to create over 35 different mattress and furniture options ranging from cribs to king size mattresses.
