Kasper Organics
Kasper Organics is a small, woman owned business, established in 1997, to create a shopping venue that would bring together organic cotton basics like socks, tee shirts, tanks, camisoles and under garments, sheets, blankets and towels. And also some of the hemp essentials like belts, hats and wallets. And a little bit of fair-trade jewelry, to add some fun and an opportunity to support artisans in economically oppressed areas.

Since I was very young, I always wanted to do something to help people. And always being kind of “earthy,” and wanting to live and work in a way that respects people and the environment, I was drawn to organic cotton, hemp, and fair-trade products.

I grew up in a time when women and girls heard the word “no” a lot. Having three older brothers it was natural for me to want to do things girls didn’t normally do—like using a power mower, riding motorcycles, working on car engines, hunting and fishing (I’m vegetarian now, but at the time anything outdoors appealed to me,) When I asked why I couldn’t do those things, the answer was always the same, “because you’re a girl.” Even the first job I ever applied for—a newspaper route—I was turned down because I was a girl.

So it’s wonderful to have my own business now in an industry where I am treated with respect, and where I feel I can really make a difference.

Being a green and socially responsible business, in every aspect, is very important to me. Kasper Organics has been a Green America Certified Business for almost 20 years! And won the Startup Nation Home-Based Business Competition in the category of Greenest.

In an effort to provide more organic green and healthy options, I began making some garments and accessories myself. Drawstring pants and shorts, leggings, handkerchiefs and bandannas, kitchen towels. And using the fabric scraps generated to make kitchen cloths, winter hats, scarves and wheat berry pillows. And more ideas are always percolating.

Over the years I have learned that there are a lot of people who need organic cotton because of multiple chemical sensitivities (mcs.) And have made it one of my priorities to operate with respect to their needs (working in a smoke and fragrance free environment) as well as always working to find ways to work more efficiently—less waste, more recycling, using more recycled and eco-friendly packing and shipping materials, office supplies, etc.

Kasper Organics is still a small home-based business, but I feel there is a lot of room to grow in the organic garment industry. And it is my mission at this time to expand by working with other like-minded women to offer more simple and earthy, and healthy but fun and affordable options for people seeking a healthier and more socially responsible lifestyle.
